Ballysax Manor Stud

Home-bred SILVER HEART [ 1979-filly-YANKEE GOLD - ALLDYKE] was a delicate foal. She was never entered in a sale and an arrangement made to lease her as a two-year-old fell through.  Left with the option of putting her into training, she did us proud and proved herself both an excellent racehorse  and broodmare.  On the track, her moment of fame came with a thrilling win in the 1983 Galway feature race the McDonagh Handicap [Listed Race].  She also placed third at Leopardstown [Listed Race] and at stud, she bred 5 winners - including WINNING HEART (see below).

SILVER HEART never in her life entered a sales ring and lived out her days at Ballysax Manor Stud to the ripe old age of 26.

We bought DOUBLE SCHWARTZ [1981 - colt - DOUBLE FORM - CASSY'S PET) as a 5-y-o horse in-training.  It was May and three weeks after our purchase he duly won the Temple Stakes (Gr 3) at Sandown.   In his next race he was beaten in a photo-finish (by Last Tycoon) in the Gr 1 King's Stand at Royal Ascot.  He was second again to the same horse in the Gr 1 Nunthorp Stakes, York.  He then went to Goodwood and easily won the  Gr 3 King George Stakes. His final victory came with a magnificent win in the Gr 1 Prix de L'Abbye at Longchamp.

DOUBLE SCHWARTZ died young but at stud left two Champion Irish two-year-olds,   COIS NA TINE and EVA LUNA.

Home-bred TANTUM ERGO [1986-Filly - TANFIRION - CATHEDRA] was turned down entry for three  Yearling Sales. Goffs Premier, Tattersalls October and Fairyhouse September.   Then in the summer of 1987 Goffs announced a new one day sale, the Sportsman's Challenge  Sale. All yearlings sold in this sale would be qualified to run in a new race, the Sportsman's Challenge  Perpetual Cup (worth ir£25,000) at Phoenix Park.  We entered TANTUM ERGO in the Sale  with the intention of buying her back and running in the race.  We bought her back for 4,000gns and on her second race she duly won the 1988 Sportsmans Challenge Perpetual Cup.  In her next start she went even better and won the C.L Weld Park Stakes (Gr 3) also at Phoenix Park.  She became a valuable broodmare at Ballysax Manor Stud before being sold to New Zealand,  being in demand to Southern Hemisphere breeders due to the success of her half-sister BENEDICTION (see below).

TANTUM ERGO'S daughter REBORN is a broodmare carrying on the line at Ballysax Manor Stud.

Home-bred  BENEDICTION [1985-Filly - DAY IS DONE - CATHEDRA] failed to sell as a yearling and we leased her to a UK based trainer.  She was returned to us as a 3-y-o due to the trainer's retirement and we put her into training in Ireland.  She won at Sligo and then placed third in the Fasig Tipton Stakes [Listed Race] at Phoenix Park. Sold  as a filly-in-training at the Newmarket December Sales for 17,000gns she went to New Zealand and became dam 10 winners including  the Australion Champion and twice 'Horse of the Year' MIGHT AND POWER[see below -  won 6 x Gr 1]    BENEDICTION  proved a great broodmare and her daughter MISS PRIORTY also became the dam of Gr 1 winner LUCKY OWNERS.  BENEDICTION is also third dam of MOSHEEN [won 4  x Gr 1 races in 2012]

BENEDICTION was later sold barren  at 15 years and returned to France where she is already dam there of  BASTET [L.R.] winner and dam of BEAUTY PARLOUR [unbeaten winner of French Poule d'Essai des Pouliches Gr 1 in 2012.]

MIGHT AND POWER [1993 - gelding - ZABEEL - BENEDICTION] a son of home-bred BENEDICTION became  'Horse of the Year '(twice) in Australia. He won six Gr 1 races including Melbourne Cup (GR 1) Caulfield Cup (GR 1) Doomben Cup (GR 1) Queen Elizabeth Stakes (GR 1) BMW Cox   Plate (GR 1) Mercedes Classic (GR 1)  and Yalumba Stakes (GR 1).

Home-bred  WINNING HEART [1987- HORAGE - SILVER HEART]  as a yearling, failed to jump an iron gate and was badly injured and torn.  The same year Goffs announced a new Sale where all horses sold would become eligible for  a colts race and fillies race at 3 years old, both races worth an amazing 1r£250,000.  With our expectations all but gone that WINNING HEART would make a reasonable price at any Sale due to her obvious wounds, we decided to enter her for the Fillies Sale and buy her back as qualified for the 3-y-o Fillies race.  Somewhat surprisingly we had to go to 16,000gns to buy her back and we put her into training with Jim Bolger.  Unraced at two she placed second on her first run at three and then won  her maiden and a winners -of-one race and duly qualified for the big ir£250,000 race at Leopardstown.  Almost last into the straight, she raced wide and with a devastating burst of speed she collared the field of 22 runners and won going away.   She later placed third in the Leopardstown Osprey Stakes [L.R] and was a disqualified third - placed fourth- in the Trusted Partner Matron Stakes [Gr 3 ] and also placed third in Ulster Oaks.

In all, WINNING HEART earned over €200,000 on the racecourse and the remainder of her days were spent as a broodmare at Ballysax Manor Stud where her daughter IDRISETTE carries on the line.

We sold home-bred TREASURE HOPE [1989 - Filly - TREASURE KAY - MOTHER'S BLESSING] for only ir£6,000 as a foal, we then reared her as a yearling for her  new owner  and we sent her to Jim Bolger in September  as a yearling.  Within six weeks, he  sent her home to us and told us he didn't want her back for ten months, until the end of August as a 2-y-o.   We duly sent her back the following August and she won the Laidlaw Maiden at Leopardstown eight weeks later. At three, she won first time out and was sent to Rome for the 1992 Premio Regina Elena (Gr 2) [Italian 1000gns] which she won gamely in an exciting finish. We have her half-sister MOTHER'S HOPE [herself a Listed Race winner] as a broodmare at Ballysax Manor Stud (see her son COLLESANO below)

 1995 - IDRIS

We bought  IDRIS [1990 - colt - AHONOORA - IDARA] as a five year old horse in-training. He had won a Listed Race as a 3-y-o and was placed third in a Gr 3 on his only start at 4 years.  He had been off the track almost 12 months when we bought him.  He turned a corner for us and was  trained by Jim Bolger.

Three months after getting IDRIS Jim Bolger rang us and asked 'Can I run your horse in a Handicap?'.   We answered 'We dont want him beaten in a Handicap'.  Jim duly entered him in the Golden Pages where with top weight, and not having been on a racecourse for fifteen months, IDRIS strode away from the opposition, winning with ease.  That year he went on to win again and was placed second in the Platinum Stakes [L.R.] second in Solonaway Stakes [L.R.] and third in Blandford Stakes [Gr 2]. However, it was the following year as a six-year-old that IDRIS showed us all what a good horse he was. He won the Gladness Stakes [Gr 3] the Ballycorus Stakes [Gr 3] the Meld Stakes [Gr 3] the Desmond Stakes [Gr 3] the Amethyst Stakes [L.R.] and the Glencairn Stakes [L.R.]  IDRIS is now standing as a stallion and has sired many winners to date.

1995 -FAG END

Home-bred FAG END [1993-Filly - TREASURE KAY - GAULOISE BELUE]   was another we failed to sell as a yearling and bought her back for 6000gns.  She was a 2-y-o winner by June, won again in July and then placed third in the Prestige Stakes (Gr 3) at Goodwood. She also placed third in the Oh So Sharpe Stakes [L.R.].  As a broodmare she bred us four winner before being sold. One of those winners was the home-bred ROMANY PRINCESS [2005 -Filly - VIKING RULER - FAG END] also a 2-y-o winner and placed third in Aubigny Stakes [L.R.]. We had sold her as a foal for 13,000gns and she was re-sold as a yearling for  65,000gns.  Ouch.

FAG END'S  two-year-old half-sister HEALTH WARNING  will carry on the line at Ballysax Manor Stud.

2000 - POTARO

We sold home-bred POTARO [1998 - colt - CATRAIL - BIANCA CAPELLO] as a foal in Newmarket for only 9,500gns.  He fetched 20,000gns as a yearling and became a 2-y-o Group winner.  In all POTARO won 5 races in UK, France and USA and earned over €200,000.  Trained in UK  at two years,  his wins included the Prix Eclipse (Gr 3) at Saint-Cloud.  At three years he added victories in the Virginia Derby [L.R.] at Colonial  Grounds and the Nick Shuk Memorial Stakes [L.R.] at Delaware Park.

His dam BIANCA CAPELLO and his half-sister PUREPLEASURESEEKER are both doing duty as broodmares at Ballysax Manor Stud..

We sold home-bred DECLARATION OF WAR [2005 - COLT - OKAWANGO-DATE MATE] as a foal in Newmarket for only uk10,000gns - the following year he fetched uk25,000gns at Doncaster. At two years, he won his first two races including theVodafone Woodcote Stakes [ Listed Race] at Epsom in June.  He went on to be second in the Gr 2 Superlative Stakes at Newmarket and then  finished second again in Prix Jean-Luc Lagardere (Grand Criterium)  Gr 1 at Longchamp.  He was a highly rated two-year-old in 2007.

We sold COLLESANO [2007 - COLT - PEARL OF LOVE-MOTHER'S HOPE] as a yearling for €20,000.   He won 5 two-year-old races in 2009 including  Criterium Partenopeo [Listed Race] Premio Toscana [Listed Race] and Criterium Mediteranean [Listed Race] for earnings of €88,972.  He has won 3 more races in 2010.

2010  -  SORAAYA

We  sold  SORAAYA [2008 - FILLY - ELNADIM - DATE MATE] as a yearling at Newmarket to Shadwell Estates for 55,000gns.  She won her maiden first time out and then ran second in the Cherry Hinton Gr 2 at Newmarket.  In her next start she gamely won the Princess Margaret Stakes Gr 3  at Ascot.
